EDITOR’S WORD:
The most important segment of the program of the 19 International Comics Festival in 2022 is undoubtedly the large documentary retrospective exhibition of Andrija Maurović, conceived and selected by Veljko Krulčić, a renowned comics publisher and historian from Zagreb. Andrija Maurović was a painter, illustrator, comics artist and one of the most striking artistic figures both in Croatia and in the whole of Yugoslavia. With his unique and distinct artistic way of life, and authentic painting style, his book and magazine covers, newspaper stories and especially exciting comics attracted the attention of the audience and the readers.
The importance of this gallery installment, accompanied by the launch of the newest editions about Maurović, is best expressed in Krulčić’s title of the exhibition: Maurović, The Old Cat, once again (or for the first time) in Belgrade? And one may add, certainly for the first time in such a unique and voluminous concept, specially prepared for this festival.
Another, very important segment of this year's festival is the exhibition of the leading Slovenian underground, or more precisely, the authorial comics artist, Iztok Sitar, who has so far released seventeen genre-different albums. In his works, he primarily deals with the attitude of young people toward love, eroticism, alcohol, drugs, social themes, and focuses on anomalies such as nationalism, chauvinism, racism, xenophobia and homophobia, the topics which are intertwined throughout his comic oeuvre.
His exhibition, titled Love Stories of Iztok Sitar primarily brings illustrations of authentic stylistic expression, followed by a high-quality degree of artistic knowledge and exceptional artistic value. Sitar is an already established artist in this region, whose works have been translated into Serbian. The exhibition, therefore, also includes comics tables from local editions, as well as a short bibliographic and portrayal segment of the author.
The exclusivity of the program of the Comics Festival 2022 also lies in the appearance of the Italian artist Daniele Meucci, author of the graphic novel Tesla: The Man Who Shaped the Future ”(Komshe, Belgrade, 2022). The story, based on an interview that Nikola Tesla gave to the Liberty magazine in 1935, was revived with a wonderful watercolor technique and, as the editor of the edition stated, it is intended for everyone who wants to learn more about the life of this exceptional inventor.
The above-mentioned exhibitions, a voluminous retrospective exhibition of Slobodan Ivkov, laureate of the Festival lifetime achievement award, and the accompanying exhibitions of the Festival (Grand Prix of the Festival 2003 – 2022; Laureates of the Festival 2003 – 2022; Here, at this place... #2), will be open to the visitors from September 30 to October 15, 2022. Live and panel programs, as well as the traditional Comics marketplace, will be held from September 30 to October 2, 2022.
