EDITOR’S WORD:

International comics festival is the festival of the ninth art, organized and led since its beginnings in 2003 by the Happy Gallery of Student Cultural Center (SKC) Belgrade, as a part of its regular program. The festival is a non-profit event; it represents the largest and the most comprehensive comics project in Serbia and one of the most important meetings in the field of the ninth art in the region.
After a series of attempts to revitalize the comics, one of the most prolific artistic disciplines in the Serbian culture on the official artistic and aesthetic scene, the Student Cultural Center, as one of the primary participants in this initiative, managed to introduce into its regular annual program all manifest expression forms of the ninth art, as one of its strategic ideas.
Since its founding, and in every decade of the last century, the SKC was indeed a relevant place for contemporary art, especially alternative forms of artistic expression, conceptual art and rock'n'roll. During the past decade and a half of our century, its activities were in an authentic way, and again on the international level, marked at the domestic artistic scene with its program of the ninth art.
In the best tradition of its brilliant historical experiences and in precisely provided program space, for the past 16 years the International Comics Festival of the SKC is being held with exceptional successes. It is conceptually based on the international competition of authors of all ages from all countries of the world, presence of the most relevant comics artists worldwide, re-evaluation of domestic comics scene from its beginnings to the present, affirmation of the domestic comics publishing and young artists, and popularization of comics and related expressions, such as animated film and illustrations.
By emphasizing the artistic character of comics and the concept of presenting comics as an emphasizis of fine arts in gallery spaces, the uniqueness of this festival is also reflected in the presentation of comics of special artistic poetry to the audience, through exhibitions and awards for inventiveness, thus breaking stereotypes about this art medium.
In the past fifteen years around 2000 authors from 57 countries worldwide took part in the Festival competition. Among them, more than 700 participants were in the “15 years of age or below” category. In the non-competitive part of the program guests of the festival were most distinguished artists worldwide, as well as winners of the Special award for the lifetime achievement and contribution to the Serbian comics scene.
In an effort to achieve the required level of quality of the programs, preparation of each edition of the festival required hard work and huge investments.
Thus, in order to maintain the festival as an event of international importance, the management of the SKC, led by director Slavoljub Veselinović, began to invest significant infrastructural and financial resources in the festival, succeeding not only to maintain it, but also to further advance it, while striving to gather at one place, and at the international level, the unquestionable qualities of the comics, and through this event, to give the ninth art the elitist level and vocation, which it deserves per se.
Program of this year’s International Comics Festival, 16th in a row, will be marked by the 50th anniversary of the popular comics editions, published by Dnevnik from Novi Sad. These two editions: Zlatna serija (Golden Series) and Lunov Magnus Strip left a deep impact on Yugoslav and Serbian pop culture since the end of sixties up to the beginning of the nineties of the previous century. In this regard, the guest of the Festival will be Miodrag Mikica Ivanović, who illustrated some 120 covers for these two editions (Il Grande Black, Zagor, Mister No, Capitan Miki, Kit Teller). He was a member of Dnevnik’s team that worked on licensed editions of Il Grande Black. He also did some 40 episodes of The Ninja for Dečje Novine Publishing from Gornji Milanovac, as well as several episodes of Yu Tarzan. During the festival and on a couple of occassions Mikica will sign comics volumes and draw comics heroes for the visitors.
Presentation of the most important Bonelli heroes at the festival will continue through the lecture of Zoran Djukanovic, titled Ken Parker – A Comics that Changed the Nature of the Westerns and Bonelli Heroes, and a panel dedicated to the 70th anniversary of legendary Tex Willer, whose circulation was almost a million copies during the heyday of the Spaghetti Westerns.
Considering another anniversary of Serbian comics – 60 years of the comics Nikad robom (Never Surrender) and 55 years of the namesake edition, editorial board of the festival decided to organize a retrospective exhibition of hitherto unpublished and unseen works of Desimir Žižović Buin (1920-1996). At the festival, Dečje Novine Dositej Publishing and Gornji Milanovac municipality will posthumously award Buin, with a prize bearing the name of celebrated Srećko Jovanović.
The guest of the festival is Toni Fejzula, a Spanish comics artist and professor, born in Belgrade, who works for Dark Horse Publishing for a long time. The festival also includes exclusive screening of animated films by Michael Dudok de Wit, edited by Andriana Ružić.
Besides the retrospective exhibition and a lecture, Tony Fejzula will introduce himself to the Belgrade audience through his album Dead Inside, translated and published for this occasion by Belgrade based System Comics.
We emphasize in particular, a film dedicated to the fate of comics artist Veljko Kockar, a rising star of the Interwar Serbian comics, titled The Last Adventure of Cactus Kid. The film, a true masterpiece of domestic documentary-animated film production, is directed by Đorđe Markovic, and based on the idea of Alexander Zograf.
The International comics festival is traditionally held from Thursday to Sunday during the last week of September. Official program of its 16th installment will take place from September 27 to September 30, 2018 in all galleries and spaces of the Student Cultural Center. Exhibitions and accompanying programs of the festival will last until October 12, 2018. All programs are free and profiled for visitors of all ages.
Welcome to the Student Cultural Center, to our biggest festival of the ninth art.
Miki Pješčić, editor of the festival
